Digital Future For Our Kids

With technology increasing in our schools, new challenges arise.  Students like using technology, but many lack digital literacy and citizenship.  Unaware that what is “shared” online will effect their future endeavors.  Being creative, publishing online is part of our children’s social interaction.  We must guide them to understand how their “digital footprint” may affect their future.  Common Sense Media has easy, free online lessons, videos and more to help students understand how to navigate their online presence and interaction in positive and creative ways.

Another resource that has been around for awhile comes from the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children created the NetSmarzKids web site in 1984 to  provide age-appropriate resources to help teach children how to be safer on- and offline. The program is designed for children ages 5-17, parents and guardians, educators, and law enforcement. With resources such as videos, games, activity cards, and presentations, NetSmartz entertains while it educates.  The site has is about a gang of cyber defenders, lead by Clicky, who teach kids things like what Bad Netiquette is or that it’s OK to tell a trusted adult if you found something on or off line that scared or made you feel uncomfortable.   They have e-Books that tell stories of a Princess's that lost her castle not knowing the password rules or Webster who finds out that not everything online it true.

Future work and learning will be a lot more fun when our kids are prepared to use digital tools safe and successfully.
